Public health agencies, community partners, and activists at the local and state level play a critical role in advancing public health. Cities and states are testing grounds for innovative and progressive policies that protect health and safety -like New York City's law on smoke-free spaces, Berkeley's soda tax, and Seattle's paid sick days ordinance. When these policies work, they reshape our shared understanding of how to address problems like economic injustice, chronic disease, and environmental hazards, and generate momentum for broader changes.
Los Angeles is embracing a vision of a healthier future. The breadth, variety, and creativity of initiatives underway demonstrate a groundswell of energy to make LA a great city for residents, businesses, and tourists alike. Join practitioners, policymakers, and community advocates for a lively discussion on innovative local efforts to address health equity through land use plans, policies, and projects, and learn about Seattle/King County's work to promote equity in all practices.
Welcome to the Virtual ENACT Day Action Center!
Take action TODAY to support our sponsored bills.
We've made it easy to send letters of support to key committee members and your representatives in Sacramento.
We encourage you to customize the letters we've created. Legislators want to hear why you support these bills--in your own words and in the light of your own experiences.
ll Californians deserve the opportunity to live in healthy and safe communities, and we want YOU to join us in Sacramento to carry that message to policymakers.
Welcome to the ENACT Day action center!
This year's ENACT Day bills address the harm being caused in our communities by soda and other sugary drinks, expand and strengthen school zones to protect students who walk and bike to school, extend the buying power of people living in poverty when they use nutrition benefits at farmers markets, and ensure that students don't start the school day hungry.

Community prevention efforts are flourishing across the country. Working together, communities are finding unique local solutions to create safe, walkable streets, promote healthy food environments, support workplace wellness and safeguard tobacco-free air. Educating local elected officials about this process is often key to building a robust prevention coalition, and can result in high-profile prevention champions in local governmenat. Please join Prevention Institute on Tuesday, Nov. 12 from 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
On October 28th, San Francisco City Supervisor Scott Wiener announced plans to introduce a ballot measure proposing a two-pennies-per-ounce tax on sugary drinks to fund health, nutrition and activity programs for San Francisco youth. Now, health professionals and advocates in San Francisco and across the state have an opportunity to join the conversation in support of the sugar-sweetened beverage tax. Through media advocacy, advocates can build momentum for the San Francisco initiative, and provide a strong counter-argument to the anti-tax arguments put forward by the beverage industry.
On June 5th, community advocates from up and down the state of California gathered in Sacramento for ENACT Day 2013. This annual advocacy day connects community representatives with elected officials to discuss the health issues that matter most to their communities. This year’s ENACT Day focused on policies to make California hospitals baby-friendly, establish a permanent statewide Safe Routes to School program, secure funding for safe places to play and be active, and provide nutrition training for child care providers.
