Preventing Multiple Forms of Violence

Prevention Institute staff recognizes the links among multiple forms of violence and also has deep expertise in preventing specific types. This selection of projects illustrates our breadth in preventing violence.

Child Maltreatment

Building Community Commitment for Safe, Stable, Nurturing Relationships and Environments, on nine elements for raising public awareness about community safety as a requirement for children’s healthy development. This project supplements the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Essentials for Childhood framework, and Managing Director Rachel Davis serves on the Steering Committee for Essentials of Childhood in California.

Community Violence

Community Safety by Design, on the potential of land use decisions to prevent violence. Land use can either perpetuate historical inequalities or expand access and opportunity, and this California Endowment project recommends ways to better integrate community safety into these decisions.

Intimate Partner Violence

Preventing Intimate Partner Violence in Marin, a strategic framework for Marin County, Calif. Strategic plans engage communities and multiple sectors to clarify and agree on the priority actions for reducing violence, and they support ongoing coordination across key groups, including the community. Sexual Violence

For more than a decade, Prevention Institute has facilitated PreventConnect, a national project run by the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault. PreventConnect uses online media to create a vibrant community of practice for preventing sexual assault and relationship violence. The web conferences facilitated by Prevention Institute consistently draw hundreds of practitioners.

Violence Affecting Youth

Moving from Them to Us, on the need to change how news media portray violence affecting youth. Race, youth and crime are conflated in news media in ways that teach people to fear youth of color. This UNITY-commissioned publication by Berkeley Media Studies Group is one example of Prevention Institute’s ongoing collaboration with BMSG to change the public discourse around violence.
