Policy and Advocacy
Prevention Institute advocates for policies and structural changes that strengthen health, safety, and wellbeing through thriving, equitable communities. All our policy and advocacy actions are grounded in our organizational commitment to advancing racial justice and health equity. In addition to our core focus on federal and California state policy, PI also supports local policy work across the country through our facilitation of communities of practice and capacity building with community-based organizations, coalitions, healthcare institutions, government agencies, and others.
Prevention Institute works in partnership to champion and support an evolving portfolio of federal policies, practices, and investments. Our priorities are selected based on their role in shaping equitable health, safety, and wellbeing outcomes and are grounded in PI’s organizational commitment to racial justice and health equity and values of connection and interdependence.
The sections below reflect Prevention Institute’s most recent legislative, administrative, and regulatory actions. If you are interested in learning more about our work in previous years, contact Sana@preventioninstitute.org.
Prevention Institute is proud to lead and collaborate on California state policy efforts that advance health equity and racial justice. We work alongside community-based organizations, statewide advocates, and state and local governments to conduct research, advance equity narratives, and change systems and policies to achieve material improvements for residents most impacted by health inequities. PI's advocacy has accelerated public investments in safe and healthy neighborhood conditions and created more democratic and inclusive policies and processes. Our current policy priorities include:
1. Strengthening community-driven approaches to safety and wellbeing
2. Healthy, equitable built environments and land use planning
3. Aligning public investments with health equity and racial justice
