In January 2016, with generous support from the California Community Foundation through its Centinela Valley Medical and Community Fund (hereafter referred to as the Fund), Prevention Institute (PI) initiated the Leaders in Equity to Advance Prevention in the Centinela Valley (LEAP-CV) project. Consistent with the Fund’s expanded guidelines, the goal of the LEAP-CV project is to engage leaders working in the Centinela Valley to identify and prioritize strategic actions to address community determinants of health. Community determinants of health influence and shape opportunities to lead healthy lives and encompass a range of factors. This report highlights findings from the research phase of the LEAP-CV project, and comprises a landscape analysis conducted through key informant interviews of Centinela Valley organizational, community and healthcare leaders, as well as a brief review of the literature.
This workbook draws on the experiences and lessons of numerous communities working to advance place-based prevention efforts. It is designed to guide community health practitioners who want to learn more about the role of community culture in environmental change efforts.

Prevention Institute Executive Director Rachel Davis joins women leaders in healthcare, health equity, and public health for a broad-ranging conversation about what we’ve learned six months into the coronavirus pandemic and what we still desperately need to do. The podcast guests discuss topics including inconsistent and inadequate data collection, attacks on public health leaders, and the importance of an equitable recovery. Rachel is joined by Dr. Shari Barkin, the Chief of General Pediatrics at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville, TN and a well-respected community researcher; Dr. Jewel Mullen, the associate dean for health equity at the Dell Medical School at the University of Texas in Austin and a previous public health commissioner in Connecticut; and Chrissie Juliano, the executive director of the Big Cities Health Coalition, which is composed of America’s largest metropolitan health departments.
