This conversation on addressing and preventing community trauma features representatives from the Making Connections for Mental Health and Wellbeing Among Men and Boys initiative. The discussion reveals how different communities define and experience trauma, from historical events that have long-lasting systemic repercussions, to emerging challenges such as displacement. Participants also explore solutions, including building community and connection, and establishing places and opportunities for men and boys to find a sense of belonging, build trust, and discover their stories and identities.

Military members and veterans face higher risks for suicide and other mental health challenges, but often are reluctant to seek support. Resilience Grows Here (RGH), in rural Farmington Valley, Connecticut is working to change that as part of the Making Connections initiative. RGH is partnering with a local air base, veterans, and community organizations, from schools to funeral homes, to promote resilience and wellbeing for military members, veterans, and their families. In this recording from the APHA 2017 Annual Meeting, RGH Program Director Justine Ginsberg shares how community partners are working together to shift the status quo to address and prevent community trauma.
